James Dunne

Intermediate Associate

James has valuable inside knowledge of how Parliament works in New Zealand. He has an LLB and a BA (History) from Victoria University, and has worked at Chen Palmer since his admission to the bar in 2008. At Chen Palmer he specialises in policy and law reform, and has developed a wide range of expertise in a number of areas:

  • Regulatory Reform: James has advised on various law and policy reforms including liquor law reform, psychoactives law reform, real estate agents law reform, taxation law reform, and child support law reform;
  • Local Government Reform: James has advised on and appeared at the Royal Commission on Auckland Governance; 
  • Professional Regulation: James has advised on the impact of the Immigration Advisers Licensing Act 2007 for the immigration sector, and on the impact of the Real Estate Agents Act 2008, and the regulation of health practitioners; and
  • Administrative Law: James has prepared an expert opinion on the awards process for a major horticultural industry, and advised several incorporated societies on aspects of their roles.

James’ development as a public lawyer was recently recognised by his promotion to Intermediate Associate. He has authored articles on psychoactives law reform and amendments to the Public Finance Act.
